March meeting of College Council

College Council met on Thursday March 21. Key items included a compliance mechanism for Ontario Certified Teachers who have yet to complete the Sexual Abuse Prevention Program, consequential amendments related to the government’s reintroduction of the Math Proficiency Test, and proposed changes to leadership pathways and technological education qualification requirements.

AQ guidelines establish the required elements that AQ courses and programs must address to be accredited to be offered to Ontario teachers. AQ courses enable teachers to expand subject knowledge and pedagogy and become qualified to teach a new subject or in a new division. AQ guidelines are revised regularly to support currency and ongoing quality assurance.

Meet Sanya Cardoza, OCT

Sanya Cardoza is the 2023 recipient of the Joseph W. Atkinson Scholarship for Excellence in Teacher Education.

Named in honour of the College’s second Registrar & CEO, the scholarship recognizes a teacher candidate’s outstanding preparedness for teacher education and perseverance in achieving their academic and social goals while they pursue a career in the teaching profession.

While maintaining an impressive GPA, Sanya co-authored a research paper exploring supportive environments for women in STEM, as well as another research paper focusing on student perspectives in educational practices.

Each year, the College Scholarship Program awards four $1,500 scholarships to exemplary candidates enrolled in a teacher education program in Ontario.

Reprimand, conditions – A Discipline Committee panel ordered Ronald Vinton Papps to be reprimanded for failing to take the appropriate next steps after becoming aware of allegations that a teacher was inappropriately touching students. Read more.
